Ok, I'm getting the hang of this now. I'll probably go back and edit Touko's so it has more close-ups of her nose and mouth too, and probably her basic face structure.
There's a lot to be said about Touya Everdeen. Unfortunately, most of it is relation to plot things, so my hands are tied. I can give you all a brief family history, like I should have done with Touko.
Touya is the result of a teenage pregnancy. His mother was eighteen when he was conceived, and his father ducked out. Her family pressured her to abort him, as having a child out of wedlock was heavily frowned upon. At the threat of being disowned, his mother left the region to live with her Uncle in Unova, where abortion was still illegal. There she had Touya and made a life for them, even though the rest of their family had turned their backs on her.
He grew up between his mom and Bianca's family. Bianca's father worked during the days, so he lacked a solid father figure growing up. However, he loved Bianca's family dearly and treasured having a sister. Since he was born after the cut-off date for kindergarten in October, his mother "Red-shirted" him so that he was in the same class as Bianca.
He met Cheren and Touko through Juniper's egg program a few years later and they became fast friends. The three were selected because of their parent's backgrounds: Cheren's father had experience with Pokemon in the police, Touko's father was a well-known trainer, and Touya's mother was a nurse at Accumula's PokeCenter.
M'kay that's about all I can tell you without getting into spoiler stuff. Hope you enjoyed!
Oh! It's a common practice in Western Society involving kindergarten age children. Basically, the typical "cut-off" date for accepting children into kindergarten is around October 1st (or November also). If a child does not turn five before or on that date, then they cannot be enrolled in that school year. The rule is lax for children who have birthdays around that date, and many parents will "red-shirt" their kid, meaning that they will hold them back from entering kindergarten that year.
The fear is that if they allow their child to go even if their birthday is after the cut-off date, they will be at a disadvantage b/c they are younger. Several parents "red-shirt" their kids so that they attend kindergarten the next year in the hopes that they will be more mature and become leaders in the classroom. These students are typically the older ones in classes, like Touya, who turned 16 years old five months before the rest of the gang. However, he is still in the same class as them. He just had a tricky birth date.
Hopefully that explained the concept! I'm an education major, so I know quite a bit about it. Don't be afraid to tell me if I need to be clearer!
Ah right, I think there are a few differences in the UK. Our cut-off for school years is the end of August, but anyone in the lower half of the year only attends school part-time for that first term. I was born near the end of August, and I think my parents might have considered holding me back if it wasn't for the fact that all my friends were going to be in that year!
Gaaah, that spelling gets me every time. Thanks! I fixed it.
I'm really happy to have you comment! And I'll always try to improve for you guys. It does make me really honored when I get comments like this. Thank you.
